Emoticon Q's, Part 1: Dimensions

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 22, 2009, 8:53 PM
As we develop the Emoticon Dictionary, there will be some questions that arise that I would like some input on from the community and you pixel lovers. My first question is...

What should the size limit of emotes be?

As you know, we tend to not have big emotes. The :llama: emote is the exception and we really don't want to see anything as big as that in the Dictionary. Emotes are supposed to fit within text. Having a 200px gap between lines of text isn't something that would be conducive to the ease of reading. Emotes are a way to enhance the emotion you are feeling while writing text, it is not part of an image board. So, what do you think the height and width limit should be? Give me a number, and defend it...I'm curious as to what you think.

It really depends... there are a lot of emotes with accessories of some sort which make the canvas bigger...
But I really can't imagine any emote being in the dictionary that exceeds 50 pixels in width. That'd be a max, at least if you ask me. :3

I'm not really an emoticon expert, but I'd say they shouldn't go past 75 px width.

You surely sure?
Your :longthrow: emote is 150px long. You think 50px should be a max?

What about height?

150x50 maximum. Personally, 100px should be the maximum width for new emoticons, though.

Keep them as they are. They're used to accentuate a point or mood, not inspire a work of art. If people want a big cutesy-wootsy bear (or some other tacky thing) pasted in the midst of text they can go write to their pen pal or draw a picture and post it on their site.

Keep it simple before the site turns into an assortment of colorful, kiddy gum ball machines you find at the mall... guaranteeing the immediate departure of fantastic artists who currently display here on Deviant.

The avatar size is 50px but an emoticon is not really like some picture you can design: I saw a 3 account thing to send a message, so, anyway, if someone want a bigger size that someone is going to find a way.

imo 55*30px is suffisantfor creativity. The width is the more friendly dimension.

I think the height should be no more than 50px-60px but the width could be probably be a lot more. Since most people usually use plz-accounts in their comments, having a 50-60px line gap shouldn't be that weird.
I don't see how having a big width would be a problem, so setting the max width to 150px could probably be reasonable I think.
